Exciting marina upgrade plans revealed

Our marina is getting an exciting makeover with plans for new community facilities and family-friendly spaces!

We are pleased to announce plans for an exciting upgrade of the marina and to unveil our new name, Sandstone Point Marina.

The proposed changes to the dock and boat ramp area will provide new and refreshed amenities for both locals and visitors with enhanced entertainment areas. The planned improvements include an expansive waterside deck with generous outdoor seating surround by lush new landscaping.

The upgrade will also coincide with the development of a new waterfront apartment complex to be located on the site of the current dry stack storage facility.

Gold Coast-based development group Ignite Projects is in the process of acquiring the marina, including the marine lease covering our 150 berths and the associated landholdings.

Ignite Projects Director Josh Foote said the proposed upgrade would breathe new life into the marina precinct, creating a more appealing waterfront activation and great new facilities for the local community to enjoy.

“This upgrade and new name is a natural progression for the marina, alongside other new developments and planned infrastructure improvements, such as the Bribie bridge duplication and Caboolture-Bribie Island Road widening,” he said.

“We will be retaining the 150 berths with no changes and the current fuel dock will also remain in place.

“While we understand that the loss of the dry stack and lifting facilities may cause some inconvenience for marina users, this is an opportunity to enhance the marina experience for the whole community.”

A Development Application for the new residential project, to be called Anchorage Sandstone Point, is expected to be lodged with the Moreton Bay Regional Council soon.

Hook a fish or a rock star:  Sandstone Point is the new place to be seen

Catch a flathead or rub shoulders with a rock star. On the right day you can do both at Sandstone Point.

Sandstone Point has always been a boaties’ paradise courtesy of our marina, which is the perfect gateway to the rich fishing grounds of Moreton Bay and Pumicestone Passage.

The fishing at Sandstone Point is also an attraction. The flathead off the old Bribie oyster jetty in front of the pub have bitten well enough to set fishing blogs alight over the years.

The mangroves contain hidden fishing treasures, and the beaches of Bribie Island are a few minutes away in a car. More and more people are also calling our community home with the development of several new apartment blocks and residential houses over the past few years. But it is the Sandstone Point Hotel that has put our village of just over 4,000 people on the map with concerts by big names including the Beach Boys, Bryan Adams, and Susie Quatro.

Thousands of Brisbanites who might never have ventured to Sandstone Point before are now very familiar with our piece of waterfront heaven. For more than a decade a generation has rocked out at the pub to some of the biggest names in music. Others have relaxed on the grass with a hamper and a bottle of wine while the highflyers have watched from the balcony of the hotel’s restaurants.

But now we are about to turn heads with our new name, Sandstone Point Marina, and our plans for a major revamp. The existing boardwalk will be overhauled and complemented by a turfed area perfect for picnics in front of the water. A sand pit with a sailboat play structure will keep the kids amused while their parents have coffee on the café on the new timber deck in front of the marina.

There are also plans for a restaurant on a boat in the water adjacent to the marina.

The marina revamp will be accompanied by a new apartment development called Anchorage which will redefine coastal living in the area and ease a chronic shortage of new homes.

Getting to Sandstone Point will also get easier with plans to widen Caboolture-Bribie Island Road and duplicate the Bribie Island bridge. Any way you look at it, Sandstone Point is on the move.

Sandstone Point - a waterfront jewel that has inspired for centuries.

Sandstone Point’s beauty has been capturing imaginations since long before Captain James Cook sailed the east coast of Australia in 1770. Nestled across Pumicestone Passage from Bribie Island, Sandstone Point is a waterfront jewel that has always inspired big dreams.

It was once a meeting place for the Ningy Ningy people where up to 2,000 members of the clan would gather at a time for rituals. More recently thousands of people have been coming to the Sandstone Point Hotel for rock concerts with legendary bands that have included the Beach Boys.

Others just come for the fishing. Situated less than one hour’s drive from Brisbane, Sandstone Point is a great place to fish for flathead and an entree to Pumicestone Passage which has bream, juvenile snapper, and trevally.

Dr Lang’s vision

In colonial times, Sandstone Point captured the imagination of Dr John Dunmore Lang, a NSW parliamentarian who encouraged free settlers to the new colony of Moreton Bay, and ultimately gave his name to Queensland’s most famous football ground Lang Park.

“There is a place Australian squatters say within the long expanse of Moreton Bay where Bribie’s Island forms a sheltered port to which a future navy will resort,’’ Dr Lang wrote of Toorbul Point, Sandstone Point’s original name.

Dr Lang’s prediction came to nought, but during World War II Sandstone Point did become a joint Army and Navy amphibious training centre for the United States and Australian forces.

A car ferry connected Sandstone Point with Bribie Island from 1947 until the Bribie Island bridge was opened in 1963.

The bridge carried a toll of 10 shillings ($16 in today’s terms) for an each way journey. The toll was converted to $1 when decimal currency was introduced in 1966 and was taken off in 1975 when the bridge was paid for.

Exciting plans ahead

The State Government in July announced plans to duplicate the Bribie Island Bridge if re-elected, delivering two lanes each way in a move to ease traffic congestion.

The new $700 million bridge would provide two eastbound traffic lanes and a dedicated active transport path for bike riders, pedestrians, and mobility devices. Westbound traffic would use both lanes of the existing bridge.

Spinnaker Sound Marina, which has been a fixture in the areas for decades, is also getting a major upgrade.

The revamped and renamed Sandstone Point Marina will be accompanied by the Anchorage apartment development, which will inspire a new level of luxury and amenity in the area.

Marina upgrade plans include a timber deck for a café, a sand pit, improvements to the existing waterside boardwalk, which will be fringed by a turfed area for picnics, and a restaurant in a ship moored adjacent to the marina.
